Bluefin V-Series Touchscreen Powers Space Exploration at the Orlando Science Center

The Setting: Touching the Stars with Creative Tech

The Orlando Science Center (OSC), a leading science museum in Florida, is known for delivering hands-on, technology-driven learning experiences. OSC partnered with Phenix Design Group to upgrade its popular Space Explorer exhibit—a multi-screen Google Earth experience first developed for OSC’s annual Otronicon / SPARK STEM Fest. Due to high visitor engagement, the exhibit was redesigned for permanent installation. Phenix collaborated with Red Dot Digital Media to deliver a fully integrated hardware and software solution, creating a durable, interactive experience that aligns with OSC’s mission of hands-on STEM learning.

The Tech: Touch Screens and Custom Interface

Creating an interactive Google Earth exhibit required giving visitors intuitive control while restricting access to system settings. To protect the experience, advanced functions were reserved for OSC technical staff. Early versions of the kiosk suffered from performance issues due to unnecessary background processes like telemetry, which slowed the interactive display and impacted user experience.

To power the Space Explorer kiosk, Phenix partnered with Red Dot Digital Media, who engineered a custom Linux-based PC optimized for graphics performance, reliability, and 24/7 museum use. The system integrates a 15.6-inch Bluefin V-Series frameless touchscreen, Nexmosphere LED buttons, and a joystick to let visitors explore Earth, Mars, or the Moon. A soft keyboard and programmable soft keys enhance interactivity, while a durable, ADA-compliant enclosure from Mega Media Factory ensures accessibility. Red Dot also implemented a secure maintenance interface, giving OSC staff-controlled backend access without disrupting the user experience.

Bluefin 15.6-inch V-Series frameless touchscreen has a sleek design, durability, and interactive capabilities. This display features a 1920x1080 Full HD resolution, capacitive touch technology, and HDMI connectivity, making it ideal for dynamic exhibit content. The V-Series' looping player and support for up to 7 push buttons allowed for versatile content presentation, while its frameless housing ensured a modern aesthetic that complemented the exhibit's design.

Key Benefits:

  • Enhanced Visitor Engagement: The interactive touchscreens provided an immersive experience, increasing visitor interaction with the exhibits.

  • Seamless Integration: The slim, frameless design allowed for easy incorporation into various exhibit setups without disrupting the visual flow.

  • Reliable Performance: The V-Series displays operated flawlessly under continuous use, demonstrating their suitability for high-traffic environments.

Conclusion:

Bluefin’s V Series displays delivered exactly what the Space Exploration exhibit needed: high-quality interactivity, sleek design, and educational impact. This project showcases how the right digital tools can enhance storytelling, elevate engagement, and transform visitor experiences.
