The Store Is the New Media Channel: The Growing Opportunity for In-Store Digital Advertising

For years, retailers have invested in digital advertising across websites, social media, and mobile apps. Now, some of that opportunity is moving into a place where purchasing decisions actually happen: the physical store.

Retail Media Networks (RMNs) are expanding beyond e-commerce, giving retailers new ways to monetize their in-store traffic through digital advertising. From screens in grocery aisles and checkout areas to interactive displays and large-format brand installations, retailers are creating new opportunities for advertisers to reach shoppers throughout their journey.

And the results are beginning to speak for themselves.

The numbers behind the opportunity

Recent research published in the Journal of Marketing examined 237 in-store digital advertising campaigns involving approximately 30 million shoppers. The findings showed that exposure to digital signage advertising increased the purchase probability of featured products by an average of 8.1%.

Individual campaigns are demonstrating similar potential:

  • Walmart Connect and Chobani: A campaign using digital screens in deli departments across 1,000 stores generated a reported 3% store sales lift and $189,000 in incremental sales.

  • Albertsons Media Collective and Mondelēz: An in-store advertising campaign delivered a reported 14% sales lift, demonstrating the potential of measurable digital media at the point of purchase.

These examples illustrate why more retailers are looking at their physical locations as valuable advertising real estate.

More than advertising: Creating a better in-store experience

The opportunity isn't simply about putting more advertisements in front of shoppers. It's about making the retail environment more dynamic, relevant, and engaging.

Digital displays allow retailers to introduce new products, highlight seasonal promotions, tell brand stories, and deliver timely messaging throughout the store. Content can be refreshed without the time and expense of replacing printed signage, while campaigns can be adapted across multiple locations.

For advertisers, that means reaching customers closer to the moment of purchase. For retailers, it creates another potential revenue stream while helping keep the shopping experience fresh.

The technology behind the experience

As retail media networks grow, the physical display infrastructure becomes an important part of the equation. Screens need to do more than look good. They must integrate naturally into store design, operate reliably throughout long retail hours, and support consistent experiences across multiple locations.

From compact displays near product shelves to large-format screens in high-traffic areas, the right display format can make advertising feel like a natural part of the store rather than an interruption.

Retail media is changing the way brands think about physical retail. The store is no longer just the final destination in the customer journey. It's becoming another powerful digital media channel.

And for retailers willing to embrace that opportunity, the potential extends well beyond the checkout counter.
